Outdoors and Playground Time
As a Green School, Geneva believes that all children should have the opportunity to
experiencenature throughout the seasons and spend time outside each day, as weather
permits. The benefits of fresh air and time spent outdoors are essential for all growing
children. Often, students are better able to concentrate and focus on tasks after they have
had time to release energy.
Research suggests that many concepts are better retained when taught in a natural setting rather than in a classroom, especially those related to the environment. A great deal of effort has been expended in creating outdoor learning areas. Several picnic tables and benches are located throughout the grounds, including on the playground and in garden
areas.
There is a deck that serves as an outdoor classroom and stage, with several wooden teepees, and more. To take advantage of the lovely weather, teachers also plan class activities which may include scavenger hunts, art, science, snacks, stories, or garden explorations.
Staff shall always maintain direct line-of-sight supervision of all students, with particular attention to enclosed play structures, such as the ship or log cabin. Staff should position themselves to maintain visual contact with all children and prevent any unsafe or inappropriate behavior.
If a child is well enough to attend school, it is assumed that s/he is well enough to go outside. Staff members do not remain inside to supervise individual children. If a parent does not want a child to be outside, they may provide indoor supervision or pick the child up early. Geneva practices “no child left inside!”
