Kindergarten Classes

As with all classes, the Kindergarten program is shaped by developmental norms. It promotes independence, social and friendship skills, and cooperation for learning in groups throughout the day. Fine motor activities are presented daily to refine basic skills in coloring, cutting, and writing.
Language, reasoning, and problem-solving are challenged and enriched through literature, science, and social studies. The class is known for its unique study of space and the life cycle of ducks.

Phonics instruction forms the core of the reading program, which is supplemented by the Learning Without Tears materials. Children study letter names and phonemes, as well as family word chunks, and learn to read and write simple words and sentences that are appropriate to their individual levels. Composition is taught through instruction in the formation of simple sentences and the creation of entries in personal journals. Reading instruction is provided on an
individual basis.

Mathematics is taught with a hands-on approach through projects that include the use of manipulatives. The skills of counting, grouping, patterning, basic operations, measuring, and comparing are some of the math activities, among others.

The children have many opportunities to work individually and in small groups, both inside and outside the classroom. Two playground periods and two snacks are offered daily. Many field trips, special lectures and events, and projects enrich this class.
